League Baseball Boycott)
Hello,
Jon,
We need your help.
My name is
Michael Lee and I am with a newly-formed
organization called Arizona Major League
Baseball Boycott (AZMLBB). Our mission
is to boycott all Arizona Diamondbacks
baseball in protest to the
discriminatory immigration law that
passed in the state of Arizona (SB
1070). The reason we are boycotting
Major League Baseball is because that
approximately 30% of players on Major
League rosters are Latino, including
some of the best in the game. No matter
what team you root for, there is a star
Latino player on the roster. The number
is even higher on some minor league
rosters. Under this new law, several
players would be racially profiled and
asked for their papers in Arizona. Also,
we are targeting the Arizona
Diamondbacks because they represent
Arizona and the discriminatory law when
they travel.
Our next
major boycott of the Arizona
Diamondbacks will be on May 7 at Chase
Field for their first home game since SB
1070 was signed into law. On May 7, we
are asking players to wear eyeblack in
support of our movement and staff to
call out sick. We are also organizing
fans to protest outside of the stadium.
We are encouraging fans and protesters
to wear a yellow armband in protest to
the new law that discriminates against
our fellow Hispanic Americans.
The New
York Times (4/23/2010) calls it the
"nation’s toughest bill on illegal
immigration." The Times continues: "The
law, which proponents and critics alike
said was the broadest and strictest
immigration measure in generations,
would make the failure to carry
immigration documents a crime and give
the police broad power to detain anyone
suspected of being in the country
illegally. Opponents have called it an
open invitation for harassment and
discrimination against Hispanics
regardless of their citizenship status."
President
Barack Obama has criticized the new law
as threatening “to undermine basic
notions of fairness that we cherish as
Americans, as well as the trust between
police and our communities that is so
crucial to keeping us safe.” Millions of
others agree: the law is wrong, and it
must be repealed immediately.
Since the
creation of our organization (about a
week ago), we have over 360 members on
our Facebook group and over 2,000
signatures on our AZMLBB petition. Check
